Early Byzantine gold ring (5th–6th centuries A.D.) set with an older Roman gemstone (1st–2nd centuries A.D.) The ring shank is hexagonal, wide, and hollow, with a diameter that widens from approximately 4 mm to approximately 7 mm near the ring face. Soldered to the top of the ring shank is an oval setting approximately 6 mm high, positioned perpendicular to the shank. The setting is conical, widening from 8 mm at the bottom to 17 mm at the top (longitudinal axis). The hollow setting is filled with “cement.” On the upper side is a horizontal, inward-curving rim, in the center of which runs an angular rail that extends all the way around. Set into the mount is a slightly domed, black agate gem (13 mm x 10 mm) depicting a winged Eros dancing to the left, wearing a helmet that grants invisibility (?) and holding a trident in his right hand (both weapons of the Cyclopes?). Apart from minimal signs of wear and tiny dents, it is intact. Maximum outer diameter 28 mm, height 33 mm. Weight with stone: 8.82 g. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in southern Germany, acquired from the grandfather’s estate. Purchased by him at art fairs and in galleries during the 1980s and 1990s. Condition: I–II
