Early Byzantine bronze oil lamp, 5th–6th century A.D. A circular, low, cylindrical base with a square opening at the bottom for fitting onto the spindle of a lamp holder (candelabrum). The opening continues inside the lamp within a tapering, conical column. The teardrop-shaped body features a distinctive, angular break at mid-height; the spout extends forward and has a round opening, which is bordered by a wide rim that curves downward. A round filling hole is located in the center of the top of the body. This is sealed by a fully three-dimensionally rendered lid in the shape of a scallop shell. The lid is mounted on a jaw hinge, allowing it to move. Attached to the upper half of the body at the rear end is a ring-shaped handle that tapers upward and backward. Olive-green patina, largely covered by ochre-colored incrustations. Tiny casting flaws; the piece is completely intact with no missing parts or alterations. Length 13 cm. Width 5.5 cm. Height 5 cm. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in Munich (estate), acquired by the father through the German art market in the 1970s–1990s. Condition: I -
