Late Antique amphora of the “Late Roman 1a” type, 5th century – early 7th century A.D. Small transport amphora for wine, Eastern Mediterranean and southeastern Black Sea coast. Flat-conical base with a blunt tip; above it, a body with a conical lower section that curves slightly toward the shoulder and tapers more sharply above the shoulder. The shoulder transitions with a gentle bend into the nearly cylindrical neck, which tapers slightly upward and ends in a vertical rim. At the transition to the shoulder, sturdy handles—oval in cross-section—are attached; they are drawn slightly diagonally upward and meet at a right angle in the center of the neck. Sturdy spiral grooves running horizontally across the entire surface. On one side of the neck and beneath one handle, there is heavy marine fouling. Otherwise, the surface is largely bare, revealing the orange-colored clay, which has been slightly roughened and somewhat rolled by its time spent in the water. On one side, there is a crack on the belly and shoulder that has fused shut. Height: 40.5 cm. Please note: Pickup only, or please request a shipping quote before the auction! CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Acquired from the German art trade in the summer of 2026. Previously in a Bavarian private collection. Family-owned since 1961. Condition: II–III
