Roman provincial amphora of the Dressel 38 / Beltran II A type, from southern Spain (Baetica), 1st–mid-2nd century A.D. Amphora used for transporting spicy fish sauces (garum). Long foot, very wide at the top and tapering conically toward the bottom; above it, a pear-shaped body that breaks at the shoulder into a slightly funnel-shaped neck. At the rim, a slightly convex, somewhat downward-curving lip on the outside. Directly below the lip, the thick, ribbon-like handles attach; they run downward, curving slightly inward at a very narrow distance from the neck, and merge into the body of the vessel at the point where the belly meets the neck. The belly and shoulder are assembled from large shards with no missing pieces. Slight chipping along the exterior fracture edges has been covered with color-matched putty. The surface shows spots of sinter and marine growth; on the neck, this covers almost the entire surface. Height 109 cm, width 26 cm. 24 kg. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Please note: Pickup only, or please request a shipping quote before the auction! Provenance: Private collection in southern Germany (special collection bequeathed), acquired by the father in the 1970s and 1980s through the German art market. Condition: II -
