Late Hellenistic–Early Roman gold ring with a carnelian gemstone, 1st century B.C.–1st century A.D. The ring shank, approximately 4 mm wide at the bottom, widens toward the shoulder to approximately 15 mm. Flat on the inside, slightly domed on the outside. The wide shoulder is hollowed out. Set on the ring plate is a carnelian-agate gemstone with a wide, beveled edge. The gemstone is framed on the sides by a rim approximately 2 mm high, which protrudes from the band at the bottom by about 1 mm, clearly set apart from it. Engraved in the center of the gemstone’s surface is a portrait of Fortuna Redux standing with an oar, a cornucopia, and a scepter. Diameter of the gem: 19 mm x 15 mm. Maximum diameter of the ring band: 24 mm. Height: 27 mm. Ring size: 58 (US 8). In excellent condition, apart from tiny dents and slight signs of wear. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in southern Germany, acquired from the grandfather’s estate. Purchased by him at art fairs and in galleries during the 1980s and 1990s. Condition: I–II
