Painted Daunian olla, 5th century B.C. A wheel-thrown pot made of light-colored clay, painted with sienna-brown pigment. The body is double-conical with a gentle transition; above it is a large, widely flared funnel-shaped rim with minimally flared lips. On the shoulder, two vertical, arched, round-barred handles are positioned opposite each other. Between the handles, at the same height, are two vertical, upwardly rounded projections. Inside the rim funnel, around the mouth of the vessel, are three concentric rings; above them, from the rim to the outer ring, are five circular segments. The handles and projections are decorated with lines. The body is painted in four horizontal zones: At the bottom, two horizontal bands; from the lower one, four triangles with their tips hanging down. Above these, two horizontal bands, divided into metopes by groups of three vertical lines. Between the handles and the projections, square metopes with crosses formed by dots. Finally, two wide horizontal bands. Apart from minimal chips, small flaking, and slight encrustations, this is a completely intact and very attractive specimen. Height 25.8 cm. Width 28 cm. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in southern Germany (acquired from an estate), purchased by the father on March 17, 1984, at “Antik-Handel Wolfgang Hettgen” in Essen.
