Red-figure lekythos, Apulia, late 4th century B.C. A footring sloping outward, surmounted by an egg-shaped body that tapers at the shoulder into a narrow neck, which widens in the upper third. A wide rim flaring outward horizontally, convex on the upper side and grooved on the lower side. A band-shaped handle, convex on the outside, rising vertically from the shoulder and curving to meet the center of the neck. Alternating black and red horizontal stripes on the base ring and above the foot. Above this, a broad pictorial field featuring a palmette beneath the handle, flanked by volutes. In front of it, a young woman striding to the left, dressed in a belted chiton. She is adorned with bracelets, necklaces, a diadem, and ribbons in her hair, which is braided and tied into a long bun at the nape of her neck. In her slightly bent right hand she holds a large bowl; in her outstretched left hand, she holds a tympanon suspended by a ribbon. A dog runs across the top; the bottom is bordered by a row of dots. The lower half of the neck features vertical stripes, while the upper part is completely covered with a glossy black glaze. The neck and handle are broken off just above the shoulder and have been reattached without any missing pieces. Height 17.5 cm. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in Upper Austria (estate), acquired by the father in the 1980s on the Austrian and southern German art market. Condition: II -
