Jug (Epichysis), painted in the Gnathia style, Apulian, mid-4th century B.C. A can-shaped, cylindrical base with widely projecting rims at the bottom and on the “lid” of the cylinder. Above the cylindrical base is the flatly arched shoulder, from the center of which emerges a long, very narrow neck that tapers forward into a long spout with a flared rim at the mouth, and at the back into the handle base with knobs shaped like monkey heads on both sides. The handle, D-shaped in cross-section, curves elegantly upward at an angle and, after a bend, descends vertically toward the base of the shoulder. On the wall of the lower section is a incised wavy scroll, on which ivy leaves and corymbs are painted in alternating white in the troughs and peaks of the waves. On the upper edge of the lower section is a kymation; on the curved shoulder in front of the spout, a woman’s head, from which tendrils with curled volutes at the ends extend on both sides. At the lower end of the neck, long, vertical tongues. Minimal chipping; otherwise intact. Height 18.5 cm. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in Upper Austria (estate), acquired by the father in the 1980s on the Austrian and southern German art market. Condition: I–II
