Bronze appliqué depicting a big cat holding a snake in its paws, 4th century B.C. Stylized figure of a four-legged predator (presumably a big cat; here not clearly identifiable due to the elongated depiction of the muzzle) with bared fangs, holding a snake firmly with the paws of all four legs; the snake’s head is turned backward beneath the predator’s lower jaw. The eyes and the front part of the snake’s forked tongue are clearly defined. The reverse side is hollow with an eyelet at the level of the rump to allow the appliqué to be mounted on a base. Green, mottled patina with minimal corrosion and brownish incrustations. The piece is a very fine example of a well-known type of so-called “Ordos bronzes,” which likely depict a key scene from a myth. Intact. Length 9 cm. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: German private collection; acquired in 2021 on the British art market. Condition: II
