Cult axe made of bronze depicting a dignitary with a dagger, Late Bronze Age of the Near East, 13th–11th centuries B.C. A figuratively designed bronze axe blade depicting a dignitary wearing a headdress, holding a downward-pointing dagger with his hands bent at the elbows in front of his chest. The same depiction appears on both sides of the axe. At the nape of the axe is the head of the dignitary wearing a flat, cap-like headdress on which a cross is incised. The shaft tube runs through the shoulder and chest. The blade tapers widely at the bottom, and the blunt, unsharpened edge is slightly curved. There is one groove on each side of the blade. Below the tip of the dagger are two rows of rectangular bumps running perpendicular to the blade; these are likely intended to represent a belt fastening on the garment, which is symbolized by the smooth blade. Slightly rough surface with a reddish-brown oxide layer and scattered dark green spots. Length 12.7 cm. An exceptionally rare specimen of unique character. A Hittite axe from Sarkisla is comparable in the design of the axe with its shaft socket and blade. CULTURAL ARTIFACT! Provenance: Private collection in northern Germany Condition: II
