A rare androgynous stone idol, Near East, 3rd–2nd millennium BC Stone. Expressively stylized, elongated, block-like body. The head is positioned at the top, with a hairline, eyes, nose, and mouth finely rendered. Slightly widened female pelvic region. The female and male sexual characteristics are clearly defined. Height: 7.9 cm, weight: 58.6 g. Androgynous idols unite the two opposing principles of the feminine and the masculine in a single being, thereby symbolizing an ideal, divine perfection and primal state. Such beings, endowed with creative power, are a component of numerous creation myths, yet corresponding figurative idols that bear witness to their cultic veneration are extremely rare.
