UNGERER (Tomi) [& HOUELLEBECQ (Michel)]. Erotoscope. Paris, Taschen, 2003. Large 4to, hardcover with full-color illustrations. Trilingual edition: German, English, and French. “The Alsatian artist Tomi Ungerer has published some 150 books over the past four decades, driven by a desire to open minds and combat intolerance in all its forms. Although he is best known for his imaginative children’s books, Ungerer’s fantastical (and often controversial) erotic drawings deserve just as much attention. This new book is a retrospective of his erotic work; it brings together 200 images covering all aspects of this body of work, including nearly 200 previously unpublished drawings. From the highly original *The Joy of Frogs* to his series of erotic flowers (’rare’ flowers with names such as *Spermafloris linguifolium* and *Perivagina superba*), Tomi Ungerer’s work stimulates the imagination and stands out for its utterly unique style."" This book is sought after not only for its author and illustrations but also for Michel Houellebecq’s foreword.
