VERLAINE (Paul). La Bonne Chanson. Paris, Lemerre, 1870. In-16 format, [2] leaves, 38–[1] pp., Bradel binding in gray half-percaline, title label running lengthwise, covers preserved (contemporary binding). A rare first edition of this early collection, printed in a run of only 590 copies. Inspired by Mathilde Mauté de Fleurville, whom Paul Verlaine married in June 1870—the year of publication—Verlaine would retain a special affection for her throughout his life. Published in the midst of the war in December 1870, the collection was compared by Victor Hugo himself to a “flower in a shell.” Some wear and stains on the original cover. A fine copy, enhanced by an author’s signed copy (E.A.S.) dedicated to the Parnassian poet and artist Léon DIERX (1838–1912). (Carteret II-418; Vicaire VII-991.)
