BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Complete Works. Preceded by a note by Théophile Gautier. Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1868–1870. 7 volumes, large 12mo, in red half-maroquin with corner caps, ribbed spine, gilt title and volume number, place and date at the tail, gilt head (binding slightly later). Spine sun-faded. Very small white spots on the spine of volume II. Small foxing in places. First collected edition, partly original, of Baudelaire’s works, published posthumously by Charles Asselineau and Théodore de Banville. It includes, notably, the third edition of *Les Fleurs du Mal*, expanded with 14 previously unpublished poems, as well as the original editions of *Petits poèmes en prose*, *Curiosités esthétiques* (with the exception of the two *Salons*), and *L'Art romantique* (with the exception of the studies on Gautier and Wagner). It opens with an extensive biographical note by Théophile Gautier. A precious copy enriched with a fine collection of engraved portraits of Baudelaire, several of which are based on works by his contemporaries and friends: - a portrait of Baudelaire by NARGEOT; a frontispiece on China paper by Félicien ROPS for *Les Epaves*, with an explanation of the frontispiece opposite; a portrait of Baudelaire by BRACQUEMOND, in Volume 1 - portrait of Baudelaire painted and engraved by MANET in 1862, in Volume 2 - portrait of Baudelaire painted and engraved by MANET in 1865, in Volume 3 - Baudelaire seated on his bed, smoking and reading, painted by Courbet in 1848, engraved by B[racquemond], in Volume 4 - Self-portrait of Baudelaire, drawn in 1848 and engraved by B[racquemond], in Volume 5 - Portrait of Baudelaire, painted by Émile DEROY in 1844 and engraved by B[racquemond], in Volume 6 - a portrait of Baudelaire by Bracquemond (see Volume 1), cut out and added as a frontispiece; a portrait of Baudelaire with a cat and a vase by MORIN, woodcut, cut out and pasted onto the back of the half-title page, in Volume 7."
