Pastiche binding in havana marbled basane, smooth spine decorated. Interesting collection of seven pieces relating to the Querelle des Bouffons (1752-1754), which broke out in Paris after the Italian troupe's performances of Pergolesi's La Serva padrona, pitting the supporters of Italian music, backed by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and philosophers, against the defenders of the French lyrical tradition originating with Jean-Baptiste Lully. Behind the musical polemic, fueled by a multitude of pamphlets, there was in fact a wider debate on tastes, court culture and the emergence of a simpler, more popular art form, which heralded the development of opéra-comique.
