HAHN (Reynaldo), 1874–1947. Autograph letter signed “Reynaldo Hahn,” undated, 2 pp., in-8 on letterhead from 7 rue Greffulhe, 8th arrondissement. A harsh letter regarding Bizet’s *Carmen* from the composer and companion of Proust, who was more forgiving toward Gounod: "[...] I am aware of all the nonsense that has been written about *Carmen* and also of all the exaggerated enthusiasm generated by this beautiful work, which is full of inconsistencies and weaknesses that are never mentioned, while Gounod and others are lambasted for the few mistakes they may have made.” He again thanks his correspondent for taking the trouble “to copy out the Bastardella passage—it must not have been very pleasant to hear.”
