RODIN (Auguste), 1840–1917. Letter from the artist, “A. Rodin,” undated, October 28, 1894, 1 p., in-12. An interesting letter regarding a dispute between Rodin and the powerful art dealer Georges Petit. The sculptor once again requests the intervention of his correspondent, who had already agreed to mediate in the dispute: ““May I ask you, since you were kind enough to do me the honor of handling my dispute with Mr. Petit, to continue using your influence to bring this matter to a close.”” Rodin proposes a solution: that Georges Petit rely entirely on their intermediary “for the choice of the sculpture,” a choice to be made during the promised visit to his studio. This was most likely Georges Petit (1856–1920), one of the leading Parisian art dealers of the late 19th century. Rodin’s relationship with his gallery went back a long way: Petit had exhibited his sculptures as early as 1886 and, most notably, had organized the famous joint exhibition of Claude Monet and Rodin in 1889, which contributed greatly to the sculptor’s recognition. Accompanied by its original certificate of export for cultural property issued by the Ministry of Culture . Also included are two other autograph letters signed by the same person: - Autograph letter signed “Aug. Rodin," undated, September 16, 1898, 2 pp., in-12, to a lady whom he compliments on the style of her letter, which is “like a natural flower, so varied and spontaneous are its form and color, just like the sentiment itself.” He concludes by saying he is not feeling well: “A thousand things plague me, even if one is favorable to me.” - Autograph letter ""Rodin, undated, 1 p., in-12 format; he arranges to meet his friend at the Café Napolitain at 6:30 to then go to the English tavern.""
