Letter from the author, “Émile Gallé,” Nancy, May 9, 1893, 1 p., in-8 on letterhead with the author’s handwritten note in the upper left corner: “Copy of my letter to Mr. A.R.” [Ary RENAN, 1857–1900, painter, writer, and art critic for the newspaper *Le Temps*]. “Dear Master, I am truly touched by the very kind words you whisper in my praise through the mighty voice of *Le Temps*. A deep sorrow has called me back to Paris on the eve of the opening. That is why I have not come in person to thank you and also to ask you to please issue a correction to your review of the Salon du Ch[amp] de Mars. The ‘clock of thoughts’ is entirely the work of the brilliant and so delicately sentimental artist known as the excellent poet Montesquiou. Once again, I merely lent this master decorator the studio where the faithful wooden replica of his cardboard model—which he had sketched in watercolor on his cabinetmaking template—was crafted. As you can see, it is a pure myth that a gentleman today is incapable of creating works with his mind and his own two hands.
