ENSOR (James), 1860–1949. Letter from the artist “Ensor,” Ostend, January 23, 1930, 1 p., in-8, addressed to Mr. de Valériola, a sculptor in Brussels. Mr. Beaufays was unable to settle the matter with his correspondent, as he had not received the subscription amount from the Kursaal. However, his nephew Devaluy inquired with the Kursaal’s accountant, who confirmed that he had sent the 2,000 francs subscription payment on November 16, 1929; furthermore, Ensor himself had given him a check from F. Franck, which settled his own share. He is sending him an issue of *Le Carillon* announcing a sculpture competition and looks forward to hearing good news from him. Also enclosed is the following: L.A.S. “J. Ensor,” Ostend, undated, 1 folio page, to a friend “G. V., Brussels”: “I received your letter and postcard; your sympathy touches me, moves me deeply, but you say nothing about the complete edition of my piece *Caprices*. Thank you for the gift of the album from the I.N.R. Here I am working under the harshest of conditions, but our lady Painting brings me satisfaction. Visiting season has arrived. I’m seeing young and spirited friends. It warms my old bones. Let me know when you have *Caprices*. Long live music and its muses! […]”
