GUILBERT (Yvette), 1867–1944. Letter from the author: “Yvette Guilbert," undated (March 6, 1909, according to a later handwritten note in pencil), 4 pp., in-12 on letterhead from 23 bis bd Berthier, addressed to Mr. Blum of the Théâtre Michel: Yvette Guilbert explains with a frankness tinged with pride why she did not get back in touch: “I am shy. I have always been so, beneath a façade of bravado […] I will never, ever enter a place where the door is not opened to me.”"Having heard nothing more from Blum—even though he could easily have reached her after the press announcement of her performances at the Théâtre du Gymnase—she had assumed he had ‘changed his mind.’” Finally giving up on moving to America due to her health, she announced that she would “try out a few Thursdays at the Gymnase” and was preparing “a lovely little musical one-act play” for the end of April, which she would gladly see find a home at the Théâtre Michel afterward. She concludes by recommending a dancer to Blum, Mlle. Cerruti, who is “fantastic for the Théâtre Michel, a curious artist.” Enclosed is another autograph letter “Yvette,” unsigned, 1 page and ½, in-8 format, addressed to Bodinier: she reminds him of her engagement at the Variétés, which makes her unavailable from Tuesday through Friday.
