RÉCAMIER (Juliette), 1777–1849. L.A., undated (“Wednesday”), 1 p., in-12, to Léonce de Lavergne (according to a later handwritten note in pencil). An interesting letter of recommendation, most likely on behalf of Pulchérie de Genlis, Countess of Valence (1767–1847), daughter of Madame de Genlis and a longtime friend of Madame Récamier. “You know, Sir, my regard and admiration for Madame Valence. I ask, in the spirit of our friendship, that you read carefully the letter she has written to you.” She renews to Lavergne “the expression of her truest affection” and asks him for news of her aunt. As the wife of General-Count de Valence, Pulchérie de Valence had long been a member of Juliette Récamier’s circle, for whom she notably created a drawn portrait. Récamier had stayed with her in Sillery in 1807. This recommendation addressed to Léonce de Lavergne, a regular visitor to the Abbaye-aux-Bois since the 1830s, attests to the role as an intermediary that Madame Récamier continued to play within her literary and social circle. In its original Charavay pouch (No. 40005).
