LOTI (Louis-Marie-Julien VIAUD, known as Pierre), 1850–1923. P.A.S. “Pierre Loti,” undated, 1 p. in-4 (cut in half along the center fold, pin marks in the upper left corner). A curious autograph manuscript expressing his love for cats (in response to a questionnaire likely sent around 1908): “1° - I love them and cannot bear to see them suffer. 2° - It is largely, I believe, because they are more destitute than we are. 3° - Yes, cats. As for my horses, I have never felt anything but a condescending, often irritated tolerance toward them. For the past four years, I have lived in close companionship with a black Angora named Pamouk [brought back from Turkey], who truly has a noble soul. 4° - None, but I loved them for their own sake.” In 1908, Loti had just been named honorary president of the cat protection society called “La Patte de Velours.”
