"Personally, I never associated with Brasillach, and I never approved of his fanaticism. In memory of a few encounters, to thank him for his attitude toward my work, and to lament his unfortunate and unjust end—in its form and severity—I felt compelled to add my name to the list of his posthumous friends. I am a Catholic; without Catholicism, I would not be who I am, and it is not at a time when its dogmas threaten to crumble that I will turn my back on them.
