HUGO (Victor), 1802–1885. Letter from the author, “Victor Hugo,” Paris, April 9 (no year), 1 p., in-8: “Your letter, Sir and dear colleague, touches me to the depths of my soul [...] since my voice reaches you and you applaud it. Alas! Everything is moving very slowly, but let us not be disheartened; let us continue this slow survey of humanity on its momentary upward slope, and with a helping hand like yours, we will reach the top! I am with you from the bottom of my heart [...]"" In a postscript: ""I don’t know how to write to that poor Hugelmann. You would be so kind as to pass this message on to him."" Gabriel Hugelmann (1828–1889), a journalist and man of letters involved in the June 1848 uprising, imprisoned on Belle-Île, on whose behalf Hugo had personally intervened as early as 1849. In its original Charavay envelope (No. 39648).
