GIDE (André), 1869–1951. Autograph letter signed "André Gide," [Paris] ("1 bis rue Vaneau"), April 7, [19]29, 2 pp., small quarto with envelope, addressed to the critic Paul Souday (1869–1929). He read with interest his correspondent’s “centromania” (column) published in the newspaper *Le Temps* on April 5 and corrects him: “[...] It is not fair to say that I ‘developed’ an extremely keen taste for Montaigne. I have always had this taste. It simply found an opportunity to manifest itself in an article I was asked to write.” He quotes the opening lines of a letter he received that same day, April 5, from Thibaudet, which prove that he cannot be held responsible for this comparison—which may seem “absurd, and in any case disproportionate”—between Goethe and Montaigne.
