SCHWEITZER (Albert), 1875–1965. A few handwritten lines signed “Albert Schweitzer” on a letter written on his behalf by Mathilde Kottmann, Lambaréné (Gabon), February 28, 1958, 2 pp., oblong in-8 format, with envelope, addressed to Mrs. C. Ducq. An interesting account of the difficult conditions at the Lambaréné hospital. Mathilde Kottmann, a colleague of Schweitzer’s, responds on his behalf to Mrs. Ducq and apologizes for the doctor’s delay, as he is overwhelmed by his work: “The doctor is hard at work and cannot afford to rest. There are so many patients that we don’t know where to house them, but the biggest problem is feeding everyone.” She also mentions her correspondent’s health issues, which prevent her from traveling to Lambaréné. Schweitzer then took up his pen himself and wrote her a few handwritten lines of concern and advice: “Consult a good specialist in France and follow his advice. Since I share in everything that happens to you, I would be happy if you would tell me what the matter is.”
