DE GAULLE (Charles), 1890–1970. Autograph letter signed “C. de Gaulle,” [Colombey-les-Deux-Églises], July 16, 1956, 2 pp., in-8 on letterhead (“General de Gaulle"") with envelope, addressed to literature professor and historian Henri GUILLEMIN (1903–1992) at the French Embassy in Bern. He took a keen interest in his correspondent’s book “Cette curieuse guerre de 70” (published that same year): “Everything that constituted the national psychology of the time—undoubtedly a ‘bourgeois’ psychology—consisted essentially of, that is to say, naturally, prejudices, [?], and fears, all of which became intertwined with disastrous events. [...] In my view, the ‘leftism’ that influenced the preliminaries and then the course of this war could not help but be harmful [...]” With its original cultural property export certificate from the Ministry of Culture (indicating the provenance of this piece in the Charavay catalog No. 805, May 1993, No. 43699).
