101 - RYFF (W.).

RYFF (W.). Newe aussgerüste deutsche apoteck, containing all the most distinguished and commonly used simple medicines, such as herbs, spices, minerals […] Strasbourg, Zetzners, 1602. Folio, pigskin bound on wooden boards, ribbed spine, covers entirely cold-stamped with small figurative plates and scrolls, an allegorical depiction of Justice in the center of the front cover and of Lucretia stabbing herself on the back cover. The illustrations consist of a large coat-of-arms vignette, 196 in-text figures—most depicting plants—as well as numerous initial letters, all woodcut. Printer’s mark on the title page. Second illustrated edition of this pharmacopoeia by Ryff, annotated by the Strasbourg physician Ager. It is divided into three parts: the first deals with the medicinal and culinary uses of plants; the second describes the various applications of different parts of a plant and summarizes knowledge of recently discovered exotic plants; the last provides details on the composition of pills, lozenges, and ointments. A fine copy.
