[Jansenism - NICOLE (Pierre)]. The Imaginary and the Visionaries. Treatise on Human Faith. A Fair Judgment, Drawn from the Works of St. Augustine. Letter from Sir Nicolas Pavillon, Bishop of Alet, to Sir Hardouin de Péréfixe, Archbishop of Paris. Cologne, Pierre Marteau, 1683. In-8, (10) ff., 696 pp. Brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Worn caps and mouthpieces. Light water stains and small foxing spots in places. A collected edition of several major writings from the Jansenist controversy, primarily by Pierre Nicole (1625–1695). Originally published in 1665–1667 under the pseudonym Sieur de Damvilliers, *Les Imaginaires* and *Les Visionnaires* continue the polemic initiated by Pascal in the *Provinciales*. In these works, Nicole defends the nuns and theologians of Port-Royal against accusations of heresy leveled by their opponents, notably Jean Desmarets de Saint-Sorlin, denouncing the imaginary nature of the doctrines attributed to them. The volume also includes the *Treatise on Human Faith*, the *Jugement équitable* drawn from the works of Saint Augustine, and a letter from Nicolas Pavillon, Bishop of Alet, to Hardouin de Péréfixe, Archbishop of Paris, bearing witness to the religious tensions sparked by the Jansenist controversy. A revised and corrected reference edition of this collection of eighteen letters directed against the opponents of Port-Royal. According to Abbé Goujet, the *Imaginaires* and the *Visionnaires* have been carefully revised and corrected in several places. The *Treatise on Human Faith* is jointly attributed to Nicole and Antoine Arnauld, while the *Equitable Judgment* is attributed to the latter.
