MEZERAY (François). A Chronological Summary or Excerpts from the History of France. Paris, Thomas Jolly, 1667 (volumes II and III) – 1668 (volume I). 3 vols. in-4, brown calfskin, spine with decorated raised bands, red title and volume number labels (contemporary binding). Missing pieces from the cap bands, worn corners, some scuffs, and small areas of missing leather. Extensive light water stains. First edition of the *Abrégé chronologique*, published in 1667–1668, following Mézeray’s *Grande Histoire de France* (1643–1651). It is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Louis XIV (missing here) and 57 engraved portraits of the kings of France. First published in 1667–1668, this *Abrégé* enjoyed lasting success, particularly due to the clarity of its presentation and the author’s independent judgment—though some of his criticisms of the monarchy’s tax system displeased those in power.
