CAMUS (Armand Gaston). A Journey Through the Newly Annexed Departments, and Through the Departments of the Bas-Rhin, the Nord, the Pas-de-Calais, and the Somme, at the End of Year X. Paris, Baudouin, Ventôse, Year XI (1803). 2 in-12 volumes in lemon-colored long-grain morocco, smooth spine with gold fillet, title and volume number labels in black morocco, gold fillet framing the covers, gilt edges, pink silk endpapers (binding slightly later, c. 1820–1830). Spines slightly darkened. First edition of this interesting account of an official journey through the territories recently annexed to the Republic. Armand-Gaston Camus (1740–1804), a former deputy to the Convention and member of the Institut, was tasked with examining the situation in the new departments on the left bank of the Rhine and in Belgium. His itinerary took him, notably, from Strasbourg to Mainz, Koblenz, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen, Trier, and Luxembourg, then to Namur, Liège, Maastricht, Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, and Bruges, before returning via Lille, Douai, Arras, and Amiens. The illustration consists of a map (shown here in two states), two etched views of Ehrenbreitstein (each in two states), and an engraved frontispiece for Volume 2 (in three states). A fine copy enhanced with the ORIGINAL DRAWING (ink and watercolor) of the map on vellum and the ORIGINAL WASH for the frontispiece of Volume II. A few foxing spots.
