Large 8vo (50 x 35 cm), black chagrin-patterned percaline cardboard binding, title in gold on the front cover within a blind-stamped frame (contemporary binding). Some slight scuffing. This rare collection appeared in two series of twelve plates in 1856 and 1857, lithographed in France and published in Peru; this copy constitutes the complete second series, published in 1857, and indeed contains all 12 lithographed and colored plates: La Zamacueca, La Zamba, El Capeador, Chorillos, El Panadero, La Plazera, El Arriero, La Chichera, El Aguador, La Lechera, El Velero, La Caleza. It offers an extremely vivid portrayal of the people of Lima and their small trades (the baker, the market vendor, the mule driver, the milkmaid, the water carrier, etc.) Although slightly foxed, this is a fine copy of this rare and sought-after series, bearing an “E.A.S.” by the artist on the endpaper, followed by a handwritten index of the plates listing the original Spanish titles and their French translations.
