A Russian icon depicting the Dormition of the Mother of God, early 19th century Single wooden panel with two molded sponki on the back. Kovcheg, tempera on a chalk ground. A very finely painted depiction: against an architectural backdrop, the Mother of God, having fallen asleep, lies on a catafalque with richly ornamented drapery. She is surrounded by apostles and two bishops. Behind her, within a red, radiant mandorla, stands Christ, holding the Mother of God’s soul in his arms. Retouching. Dimensions: 28 x 23 cm.
