A large icon depicting the rare subject of Saint Michael the Archangel, Russia, late 18th century Assembled from three wooden panels with two sponki on the back and a horizontal strip attached at the top. Tempera on a chalk ground. In the center of the picture plane stands Saint Michael in golden armor, a red cloak, and with outstretched wings. In his left hand, he holds the Sphaira with an inscription. Above him, the New Testament Trinity is enthroned on a cloud bank with cherubim and the symbols of the four Evangelists. They are surrounded by choirs of angels with trumpets. Below them are princes and archangels. God the Father holds a set of scales in His left hand as a symbol of the Last Judgment. The depiction thus reflects Michael’s role in the Second Coming of the Lord, the Last Judgment. Minor losses. Dimensions: 54 x 44 cm – expert report by Bernhard Bornheim enclosed. Condition: I–II
