An Italian majolica plate, "The Meeting of Tamar and Judah," Urbino, second half of the 16th century A majolica plate delicately painted with an Old Testament scene. At the foot of the tree in the center, to the left of the faintly suggested city gates on the right side of the image, sits Tamar, disguised as a prostitute. Judah approaches her from the left, pointing with his arm toward the reclining dog, which is looking up at the seated woman. Mistaking Tamar—the wife of his firstborn son—for a prostitute, Judah intends to sleep with her, whereupon she asks him for his ring and staff as a pledge. On a short pedestal, the reverse side features a wall that transitions into a broad banner via a convex rise, divided by yellow bands (small chip at the edge). The base is inscribed in archaic Italian. Diameter 29 cm, height 4.5 cm. Condition: II
