A large silver plate, Augsburg, Heinrich Mannlich (Master 1658–1698), probably 1670–74 Silver, traces of gilding. Heavily embossed decoration. On the field, three figures set against a landscape backdrop. A domed frieze with four medallions featuring Baroque-style busts of women from the Flavian imperial family: 1) Julia Titi (daughter of Emperor Titus), 2) Domitia Longina (wife of Emperor Domitian, Titus’s brother and successor to the throne), 3) Flavia Domitilla (the Younger), daughter of Flavia Domitilla the Elder, wife of Emperor Vespasian, the father of Titus and Domitian, and 4) Annia Aurelia Faustina, who was the third wife of the Roman Emperor Elagabalus. Framed by four eagles and rich foliage. Outer edge with a tremolo line, slightly smudged mint mark, and master’s mark “HM.” Dimensions: 34.5 x 40.5 cm, weight: 593 g—See Seling, Vol. 3, No. 1613—In the mirror image, the figure on the left could be Domitilla the Younger, and the one on the right her husband Titus Flavius Clemens (great-nephew of Emperor Vespasian). Domitilla appears to be wearing a veil at the back (bestowed by Pope Clement I; an episode from a hagiographic legend about Domitilla). The figure in the center could be a Jew or a Christian, to whom Domitilla and her husband were, according to legend, very devoted. Condition: I–II
