"Red Stag in Rut," Josef Pallenberg (Cologne 1882 – 1946 Düsseldorf), probably first half of the 20th century Cast bronze, brown patina with greenish oxidation tones; "Josef Pallenberg" signature incised on the front left plinth. The sculpture depicts a red stag in a characteristic rutting posture: head held high, mouth open, antlers spreading wide. The modeling is striking, featuring well-defined neck musculature, a tense posture, and a lively stride. Mounted in modern times on a rectangular pedestal of dark green-black veined marble. Surface with an evenly aged patina; slight signs of wear. The marble base has a few fine scratches. In good condition. Dimensions of the bronze: approx. 21 × 24.5 × 4 cm; with base: approx. 23.5 × 28 × 8 cm. Josef Pallenberg is considered one of the leading German animal sculptors of the early 20th century; his naturalistic sculptures of wild and zoo animals were created through close engagement with the animal population of the Cologne Zoological Garden.
