"Studies of Moose," Richard Bernhard Louis Friese (Gumbinnen 1854 – 1918 Bad Zwischenahn), 1906 Watercolor and pencil on paper. Inscribed in pencil lower left: “27.9.06 / Mok R. Friese”; monogrammed “RF” and dated “27.9.06” lower right; another, partially legible pencil inscription upper right. Two plein air studies of two massive moose bulls set against a Nordic lakeside landscape: on the left, a feeding bull with shovel-shaped antlers, viewed in profile to the left, in front of low deciduous shrubs; on the right, a standing bull in a three-quarter rear view, head turned to the right, on a raised edge of the terrain, set against a sweeping lake landscape with a belt of coniferous forest on the horizon and a cloudy sky rendered in shades of gray. Slight general yellowing of the paper; isolated spots. Sheet dimensions 13.6 × 20.3 cm, frame dimensions 29.8 × 36.5 cm. Richard Friese, a professor at the Prussian Academy of Arts and court hunting painter to Emperor Wilhelm II, is regarded as an outstanding representative of German hunting and animal painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a focus on depictions of moose and deer in Nordic landscapes.
