"Rutting Stag," Willi Lorenz (Cologne 1901–1981), mid-20th century, pen-and-ink drawing on paper. Lower left: estate stamp; verso: identical estate stamp. With confident, spontaneous lines, varying pen pressure, and dense clusters of hatching to create a sense of volume, the sheet depicts a charging red stag in the center of the composition—head thrust forward, mouth open—with a doe on the right evading it behind a tree trunk falling diagonally into the picture; on the left, a group of trees frames the scene. Scattered brownish foxing spots in the upper third of the image as well as a larger spot upper right; general yellowing. Frame with a missing section of the topcoat along the upper edge. Image dimensions 19.3 × 27.3 cm, frame dimensions 39.7 × 47 cm. Willi Lorenz was a painter of hunting scenes and animals, a student of Robert Seuffert at the Cologne School of Applied Arts, and is associated with 20th-century Rhineland animal painting.
