“Virgin and Child,” attributed to Werner Peiner (Düsseldorf 1897–1984 Leichlingen), 1926 Oil on canvas, in an ornate frame with a gray border and gilded accents. Signed and dated “W. PEINER 26.” in the lower left corner. The composition focuses on Mary, the Infant Jesus, and the donkey in a expansive mountain landscape featuring striking rock formations, a lake, and a stream. The paint layer exhibits widespread craquelure, isolated scratch marks, and small areas of loss, particularly in the sky and the lower part of the painting. Under UV light, localized retouching is visible throughout the picture surface, primarily in the landscape background. The frame shows scuffing and small areas of loss in the mount and gilding. Painting dimensions: 80.5 × 75.5 cm; frame dimensions: 93.5 × 89 cm. The painting was created during Peiner’s early Düsseldorf creative phase, when he received his first commissions for ecclesiastical and architecture-related decorative works. Condition: II–III
