"Elk," Willy Lorenz (1901–1981, Cologne) Oil on canvas. Signed lower left: “Willy Lorenz / Köln.” On the reverse side of the canvas, the manufacturer’s stamp “Viktoria Malleinen”; on the stretcher and frame, the stamp “Willy Lorenz.” Two moose in open terrain with broken wood and dry vegetation; on the right, the bull with shovel-shaped antlers; on the left, an antlerless animal; the foreground and animals are painted in a thick, impasto style, while the sky and haze are applied thinly and flatly. Fine craquelure across the entire picture surface. Surface soiling as well as isolated dark particles and fibers in the upper third of the picture. Frame with dents on all four corners. Painting dimensions 40.5 × 60 cm, frame dimensions 55 × 75 cm. Lorenz was a hunting and animal painter active in Cologne. Condition: II
