"Buffalo," Willy Lorenz (1901–1981, Cologne) Oil on canvas. Signed lower left "Willy Lorenz"; signed "Willy Lorenz" again on the back of the canvas. An African buffalo with sweeping horns fused together at the forehead to form a solid shield, facing left against a backdrop of dense shrubbery; in the foreground, sandy ground with a puddle of water. The reverse of the canvas is unevenly discolored; likely due to the binder seeping through. The paint layer is impasto throughout, with no visible losses. Craquelure is scattered sporadically across the picture surface. The frame shows wear on the visible edge and outer profile, as well as scratch marks on the bottom rail. Painting dimensions: 50.2 × 70.2 cm; frame dimensions: 61 × 81 cm. Lorenz was a hunting and animal painter active in Cologne. Condition: II
