"The Loner," Willy Lorenz (1901–1981, Cologne) Oil on canvas. Signed lower left “Willy Lorenz.” Signed “Willy Lorenz” on the back of the canvas. Stamped twice on the back with “Willy Lorenz / Nachlass,” on the canvas and on the upper stretcher bar. An elephant with tusks, depicted head-on in an open landscape; groups of palm trees on both sides of the middle ground, low vegetation, and a cloudy sky. The paint layer features a relief-like texture with impasto in places. Canvas with pronounced vertical, wave-like distortions. Frame with several cracks in the raised ornamentation, particularly in the lower left corner, as well as scuffs and isolated areas of missing varnish. Image dimensions 60.5 × 80.5 cm, frame dimensions 80 × 100 cm. Lorenz was a hunting and animal painter active in Cologne. Condition: II–III
