“Gargilesse,” attributed to Léon Detroy (Chinon 1859–1955 Saint-Germain-d’Arcé) Oil on canvas. Inscribed lower right “Gargilesse,” with “L. Detroy” below. The title and signature are executed in black paint and each traced over in reddish-brown paint, though not exactly overlapping. Two blossoming trees in a meadow in the foreground; behind them, terraced fields and wooded areas in a vast hilly landscape extending to a range of hills on the distant horizon. The paint layer features impasto application, particularly in the areas of the trees and the middle ground. Isolated cracks in the raised paint bridges. The canvas has a puncture mark and associated loss of paint layer in the upper left corner of the painting. Another loss of paint in the paint layer along the left edge of the painting, level with the center of the composition. Dark brown to black speckled deposits scattered across the picture surface. Frame with cracks in the profiled moldings, scuffing, and isolated areas of damage to the varnish, as well as a larger loss of material along the right outer edge. Painting dimensions 65.0 × 91.3 cm, frame dimensions 87.5 × 114.0 cm. Detroy worked in the Creuse Valley from 1881 onward, including in Gargilesse, Crozant, and Fresselines; his painting is classified as Post-Impressionist. Condition: II
