"Coastal Landscape," Hermann Eschke (1823–1900, Berlin), second half of the 19th century Oil on canvas. Signed "H. Eschke" in the lower right corner. On the reverse side of the canvas, a round purple stamp, mostly illegible, with “Wien” legible; on the lower stretcher bar, a printed paper label reading “Hermann Eschke (Berlin 1823–1900)”; handwritten pencil notes on the back of the frame, not clearly legible. Coastal landscape; on the left, a sailboat at the shore, next to it two figures; on the right, a vegetated headland with buildings, and a brightly lit coastal area on its left flank; birds above. A net-like age-related craquelure in the impasto-like, light-colored area of the headland, with isolated instances in the remaining areas of the painting. One small missing area each at the right edge of the painting and at the upper edge. Small, dark deposits in the sky area. Isolated superficial scratch marks. Retouching is visible under UV light in the sky, along the edges of the painting, and in the shoreline area. Frame with damage to the molding at the groove and inner edge, exposing the red primer; wear on edges and corners; open miter joint at the upper right corner. Image dimensions 15 × 24 cm, frame dimensions 24.2 × 33.2 cm. Eschke, a student of Wilhelm Krause and Eugène Lepoittevin, was a royal professor and teacher of Louis Douzette and Carl Saltzmann.
