"Auf weitem Weg" (Sailing Ships on a Swelling Sea), Claus Bergen (Stuttgart 1885–1964 Lenggries) Oil on canvas. Signed “CLAUS BERGEN” in the lower right corner. A choppy sea with three sailing ships in square-rigged configuration; the largest in the right-center foreground, viewed from the front at an angle, with several sails bearing a red cross with widened arms, and red and blue flags at the mastheads; two additional ships on the horizon to the left and right; a cloudy sky above a high horizon line. The paint layer in the upper third of the painting exhibits fine, net-like craquelure, denser in the upper left half of the painting. Isolated cracks in the paint layer in the upper left and upper right quadrants. Under UV light, retouching is visible in the sky area, distributed across the entire upper third of the painting, as well as in several places along the upper and left edges of the painting. Small, brownish spots along the right edge of the painting in the lower third. Painting dimensions 74.3 × 105.2 cm, frame dimensions 87.2 × 118.2 cm. In addition to contemporary marine subjects, Bergen also devoted himself to historical depictions of ships; in the 1940s and 1950s, he produced several works featuring early modern sailing ships.
