"Fishing Boat," Claus Bergen (Stuttgart 1885–1964 Lenggries) Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: “CLAUS BERGEN.” Stretcher frame branded multiple times on the reverse: “ADRIAN BRUGGER MÜNCHEN”. On the reverse side of the canvas, a stamp in the shape of a coat of arms, indecipherable. A sailing fishing boat with reddish-brown sails, viewed from the side on choppy waters; three men on board; in the background on the left, two additional boats; on the right, a third boat in front of a steep coastline, with seagulls overhead. The paint layer in the light areas exhibits fine, irregular craquelure. The support has several bulges protruding from the back, primarily in the upper third of the painting. Dark brown, dot-like marks in the sky of both upper quadrants; in the upper left quadrant, they form a vertical row extending approximately 4 cm. Extensive yellowish soiling in the lower right quadrant next to the title, as well as in the three remaining quadrants. On the reverse, there are small, dot-like brown deposits and extensive brownish discoloration across the entire canvas. The frame has areas where the stucco coating is missing on the upper right corner cartouche as well as on the outer grooves and visible edges, exposing a layer of red bolus. Dimensions of the painting: 75.5 × 110.5 cm; frame dimensions: 91.0 × 126.5 cm. Bergen studied at the Munich Academy under Carl von Marr; in addition to seascapes, his oeuvre includes coastal and fishing motifs.
