"Dutch Peasant Landscape with Farmstead," attributed to Jan Simon Voddigel (Amsterdam 1820 – 1862 Amsterdam) Oil on canvas, with relining. Signed in the center. The painting depicts a rural scene with a thatched farmhouse in the foreground, in front of which a peasant woman greets a passing visitor. To the right of the building stands a gnarled oak tree; behind it stretch meadows, shrubbery, and clusters of trees. Another settlement is hinted at in the distance. The sky features moving cloud formations with patches of sunlight breaking through, characteristic of 19th-century Dutch landscape painting. The composition follows the classical repoussoir technique with a subdued color palette in shades of brown, green, and ochre. Signed at the bottom center of the painting. In a historicizing, partially gilded wooden frame with rocaille decoration. Extensive age-related craquelure. Minor losses scattered across the picture surface and along the edges. The frame shows flaking of the gilding and minor damage. Painting dimensions 30.5 × 39 cm, frame dimensions approx. 47 × 55.5 cm. Jan Simon Voddigel, a 19th-century Dutch landscape painter based in Amsterdam, follows in the tradition of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting, particularly in the tradition of Meindert Hobbema and Jacob van Ruisdael.
