"The Zither Player in a Farmhouse Parlor," Maximilian Wachsmuth (Laßrönne 1859–1912 Munich), circa 1900 Oil on canvas. Signed "M Wachsmuth" in the lower right corner. In a farmhouse parlor, a young woman in regional traditional dress sits on the left with a zither on her lap. On the right are two men in lederhosen with tobacco pipes; one is standing and the other is sitting on a brick stove bench. The canvas shows wavy distortions in both upper corners of the painting. Two scratch marks run along the upper edge of the painting. In the upper right corner, there is scuffing as well as a small puncture in the canvas substrate with associated loss of paint. On the reverse, a small canvas patch in the lower part of the painting; under UV light, local retouching is visible at the corresponding spot to the left of the stool. The frame shows scuff marks and isolated areas of paint loss, particularly on the profiled inner moldings. Painting dimensions 80.5 × 100 cm, frame dimensions 93.2 × 113.5 cm. Wachsmuth studied at the Munich Academy beginning in 1883 and, in addition to landscapes, primarily created Alpine genre scenes. Condition: II -
