"Portrait of a Man," attributed to Eduard von Heuss (Oggersheim 1808–1880 Bodenheim near Mainz) Oil on wood. Signed "v. Heuß" in the center right, with a date below that is not clearly legible. A bust portrait of a man with dark, curly hair and an upturned mustache against a dark background; dark coat, white stand-up collar, and dark necktie. Wooden panel composed of three vertically joined boards; dark filler or adhesive material along both joints on the reverse. Isolated scratch marks and localized loss of paint, particularly in the background and in the dark areas of the clothing. Surface with locally uneven sheen. Under UV light, extensive retouching and overpainting are visible in the flesh tones, particularly on the left side of the face—on the forehead, cheek, and jawline—as well as retouching along the vertical board joint running down the right side of the painting. The frame shows signs of rubbing and isolated defects in the gesso. Panel dimensions 44.8 × 36.9 cm, frame dimensions 59.5 × 51.5 cm. Heuss was primarily active as a portrait painter and was elevated to the Bavarian nobility in 1869. Condition: II–III
